Sodium cyclamate is an artificial sweetener. It is 30–40 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar).
Chemical properties of sodium cyclamate
Sodium cyclamate, white needle, flake crystal or crystalline powder. Odourless. It tastes sweet, and its dilute solution is about 30 times sweeter than sucrose. The sweetness is 40~50 times of sucrose, and it is a non-nutritional sweetener. 10% aqueous solution is neutral (pH 6.5), stable to heat, light and air. Slightly bitter when heated. Decomposition temperature is about 280℃, caramelization reaction does not occur. Slight decomposition in acidic environment, stable sexual time. Soluble in water (1g/5ml) and propylene glycol (1g/5ml), almost insoluble in ethanol, ether, benzene and chloroform. Its concentration is more than 0.4% with a bitter taste, dissolved in nitrite, sulfite content of high water, oil or rubber like odor. It is non-hygroscopic and does not support the growth of mold or other bacteria.
Uses of sodium cyclamate
It is a non-nutritive synthetic sweetener, its sweetness is 30 times of sucrose, but the price is only one third of sucrose, and it does not have a bitter taste like saccharin, so as an international general food additive can be used in refreshing drinks, fruit juice, ice cream, pastry food and preserves. It can also be used in household, cooking, pickles, cosmetics, sweet syrup, sugar coating, sweet ingots, toothpaste, mouthwash, lip balm, etc. Diabetics and obese people can use it as a substitute for sugar.
Usage of sodium cyclamate
1. When used in conjunction with the ratio of 1 to 500 water, there is enough sweetness.
2. When used alone, it is 10 grams sweet equal to 500 grams (50 times) of sucrose.
3. Sodium cyclamate and sucrose, when used together, its sweetness can reach more than 80 times
4. Sodium cyclamate, when used together with sucrose and 0.3% organic acids (such as citric acid.), has a sweetness of 100 times.
